Often people who like snow want to enjoy their winter sports closer than Colorado or Wisconsin. Admittedly for most citizens of the Quad Cities, the thought of snow is not high on the most wanted list. For them, the parks and river may have a lot more appeal. However, if snow is important to you, there may be some local solutions. There are a lot of areas off the river that is also used. However, I am reluctant to mention many of these because of the risk factor. The bluffs can be fatal to sledder's and many have lost their lives by falling through the ice while going fishing or skating. So use common sense and take all the usual precautions. Then watch out for each other, be patient and careful. Don't forget to keep your eyes open for the hundreds of eagles that winter here. The dam's are all good viewing areas, especially when the river is iced over. Stay away from their roosting areas. Especially areas like the bluffs just upriver from the Hampton Dam on the Illinois side. These evening roost are important for their protection. Day roost in the trees on the banks of the river are not a danger to their survival and make excellent opportunities for viewing and photographs.

WINTER SPORTS - OPPORTUNITIES IN THE QUAD CITIES

• SNOWSTAR is our local winter sports park. They have been around for quite a few years now and recently have added a new lift and some new trails. It is only a bluff, but they do have beginner and intermediate slopes. Although the rides are not as long as in Colorado, they will compare closely with the amenities found North of Chicago in Wisconsin. Snowstar features snow making machines, lessons, equipment rental, and down hill and cross country. Found just off Rt. 92 South of Andulusia, Illinois. 9500 126th Taylor Ridge Ill. • QCSC SKATING RINK - Daily public ice skating sessions. Call 319-322-5220 for daily session times. Also feature lessons, a fully stocked shop, and can be rented for parties. 700 W River Drive in Davenport. Check them out at www.qcsportscenter.com
• ILLINIWEK PARK - Large bluff for sledding, toboggans, tubing and I have even seen some ski's. Just North of East Moline, Illinois before you come to Hampton. Great hill, can get a little crowded and the hike up can wear you out, but it is worth it.
• ANNIE WITTENMEYER CENTER - On the 29th Street side there is a nice long hill with a couple steep drops for sleds, toboggans and tubes. Davenport, Iowa
• DUCK CREEK PARK - At the entrance there is a short steep hill that gets a lot of attention from the little ones. If you continue back to the golf course club house, there is a much longer hill with two take offs. One starts steep and then mellows out, the other is just mellow. A lot more time on the ride, but oh! the walk back up. If you continue down the road and bypass the golf course turn, you will arrive at a parking lot with access to the bike trail for cross country skiing.
• WEST VIEW PARK - If it gets cold enough, long enough, This park has four lakes to skate on. Pretty good ice fishing too! Located out West 61 and follow the signs. Just a mile or so West of 280.
• VANDERVEER PARK - Pond used in season for ice skating.
• WEST LAKE PARK - I 280 and 67. - Ice Fishing - Three lakes to choose from
• HAMPTON DAM  - Iowa side of the river on slough used for small boat access - Ice Fishing
